What color should I paint my office?
After working off the dining room table for the last few months, I finally decided to take the big plunge and set up a home office. This may have seemed an obvious next step for most people, but it hasn’t been for me. I’ve been pushing off the big move because I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted.
Moving in to the guest room
No, I wasn’t throw out of my bedroom for misbehaving. I moved my home office into the guest room in my house. It was very important to me to figure out how to situate all the elements in the room to make sure that it is conducive to working. I have my back to the window, so that I am able to enjoy the sun shining in without all the distractions of the world around me.
So what color?
After doing a bit of research (and asking my friends on Facebook and Twitter), I decided to go with blue. It seems that in cognitive studies, researchers have found the blue stimulates creativity. Sign me up for some of that. On the other hand, red seems to keep people in a heightened state of focus. Both are good, but I think that I’ll go with blue.
Big change
I feel like everything is much more real now that I am sitting and typing away at my desk. It lends a feeling of professionalism. It was something that I was missing and I didn’t even realize it. I guess it makes sense. After all, I am the woman that wrote a whole blog post about why it’s bad to work in your pajamas. It follows the same rule.
Don’t wait
I didn’t wait for a home office to start The Pet Wiki. First I got the business started, then I worried about things like a home office. Don’t let things hold you back. You don’t have to know everything and get everything perfectly ready before you are able to start. I’ve come a long way (baby), and most of the reason that I’ve been so successful is that I just don’t let things hold me down. Things need to get done, and they do. Don’t get stuck on the small stuff.
I like it here. Desk, chair, printer, plants, clock. Now that I’m all set up, it’s time to get down to business.
On a side note, one of the things that pushed me into making the big move now was that I thought it was a more ‘green’ way to go. Now that the winter is upon us, it kills me to heat the biggest room in the house, when the guest room will work just fine.

You got it. I think that it will have a bit less stuff than my last one 🙂

I never consider my surroundings in me office – I much prefer focusing on the music in the background. That being said, my office generally is replete with Twitter Budgies flying around and mooses barreling into my French doors, so go figure. 🙂

I think that we all have little Twitter budgies to keep us on our toes these days. I’ve got the real thing too. I sometimes share my office with a Sun Conure. No mooses.
Depending on what I’m working on, I sometimes find music a bit distracting. I guess I’m just too prone to sing along. Maybe I should try classical. 😉
